Hoof 'n Hearts Horse Rescue

Candace Scheirer: Handling All of You and Your Horse's Needs

The crew that runs this place...

Hoof 'n Hearts may be run by Candace, with occassional help from Marius, but we certainly have to give credit where credit is due.  This farm is really run by four of the coolest dogs around!  They each have their self-appointed jobs, and they know them very well.

Molly is a four year old tri-colored Corgi who has taken on the leadership role at the barn.  Molly arrives at the farm every morning with Candace and promptly begins her job...running in narotic circles making sure everything is in order.  She makes her rounds out in the field, stopping at each horse, making sure nothing is amiss.  If the horses are in their stalls, Molly makes continual never-ending rounds from stall to stall...she is resilent when it comes to keeping an eye on the horses.  If she thinks something is wrong, she sticks with them and "sounds the alarm", barking till someone comes over to her.  She is quite a character with an abundance of personality.

Riley is a eight year old huge Rotteweiler who is just a big love bug.  He acts as the "pretend" guard dog...at first glance, he looks like a big tough dog.  Then you meet him and realize the barn cats are more aggressive than he is!  Riley quietly watches over all the activites that go on at the farm from a couple of his favorite look outs...Guinness'stall, the tackroom, and the little cement slab.  Everyone that meets Riley, falls in love with Riley.  He truly is just an over-grown teddy bear. Riley is content to just relax and take everything in, but if something is up, he's not afraid to step in for us.  He's a good boy to have around...and a great dog to snuggle with! He is Marius' awesome pooch, and Molly's boyfriend.

Update: This morning (3-6-09) Riley passed away at home.  He had a rough couple of months that were filled with ups and downs for the handsome boy.  He had lymes disease that often would flair up, and then started with some other unknown illness that very sadly got the best of him.  After seeing the vet easily ten times in three weeks, we still had no answers for what was wrong with poor Riley Roo.  After jumping in the car this morning at 7:35am, Riley collapsed and passed on to his next life.  Thankfully, he was at home with Marius and getting ready to go for a ride, which was something he always loved to do.  Farewell, buddy....you will be deeply missed.  There will never be another dog like you...you trully were one in a million.  RIP, Riley!!  Riley was buried next to his sister, Kassidy, at home where he can forever lay and watch over the ones he loves.

Teflon is a Fila Mastiff who Candace got as a tiny puppy.  Teffy is no longer a puppy...he is now a two and a half old and weighs over 1100lbs!  Teflon is a very fun loving dog who is always up for running, playing, and goofing around...he is quite the character.  Teffy is definitely a Fila though, and is very wary of stranger. He has "his people" and that's it! If your not in his circle, he is does not want to be bothered with.  Even though Teffy is so big, he still believes himself to be a lap dog!  Goofy guy!

Update:  Teffy was sadly diagnosed with a congenital heart deformity.  The mitral valve of his heart (between his left atrium and left ventricle) does not open or close properly and allows regurgitation of blood back into his atrium.  To add to his issues, he also has bladder stones and a stone wedged in his urethra.  He will be going in for surgery in the very near future.

Update:  As though Mr. Teflon didn't have enough on his plate, he tore his right hind cruciate ligament jumping off of the bed!!  He will need that repaired also when he goes in for surgery!! What a disaster!  Poor guy!

Update:  Teffy ended up getting by without surgery! Yay!! Teflon is now almost three and is doing pretty well, all things considered. He gets short of breath very quickly and still has a very rapid and irregular heartbeat thats visible even just watching his chest.  But he is still going and hanging in there...

Mr. Bowtie Jangles is our new kitty cat!! He is approximately four months old.  He recently "adopted us" when we were out feeding the horses.  No one knows where he came from, but he showed up with a flea collar and the sweetest personality.  He is a very handsome black cat with a white belly, paws, and nose. He is now an inside/outside cat and loving it!  Pictures coming soon!
